Website Speed: Why Seconds Decide Sales

Speed is a design decision, not a hosting upgrade. Here is where the weight actually comes from.

Where the weight comes from

The heaviest part of a typical page is rarely the design — it is the images, the fonts, the third-party scripts and the unused code that a page builder ships whether you use it or not. Hand-built pages carry only what the page needs.

Images are the first thing to fix

Export images at the size they will actually be displayed, use a modern format, and lazy-load anything below the fold. A hero image that is three times larger than its container is pure waste.

Motion has a budget too

Animation should feel immediate. If an effect delays interaction or consumes a device's resources, it is a liability. Speed of response is itself a form of craft.

Perceived speed matters

A page can be technically fast and feel slow if content shifts as it loads. Reserving space for images and fonts prevents the layout jumps that make a site feel unstable.

Takeaways
  • Export images at display size and use modern formats
  • Audit third-party scripts before adding them
  • Reserve space to prevent layout shift
  • Treat responsiveness as part of performance
